The Claddagh Ring Museum Of Galway Is A Must To Visit When In Ireland
The city of Galway is famous for its Claddagh ring museum. The ring which is today an internationally recognized item of jewelry is a major aspect of Irish culture that people touring Ireland should not miss seeing. The village of Claddagh after which the name was named is within the limits of Galway city. It has grown to become a bustling and expensive neighborhood now from its first beginnings as small fishing village. It also happens to be one of Galways more expensive residential areas.
It was probably jeweler Richard Joyce who made the first Claddagh ring
Although the history of the Claddagh ring consists mostly of fables, one real evidence exists that indicate the originator of the ring to have been a Richard Joyce, a former captive of an Algerian pirate who was later sold as a slave to an Algerian jeweler. He spent most of his time in captivity learning the techniques of his master for fashioning Claddagh rings. When he was finally released he returned to Galway and put up his own goldsmith shop where he made the first Claddagh ring.
The first Claddagh rings may be found in the Claddagh Ring Museum
A number of original rings by Richard Joyce are shown in the museum together with rings crafted by other expert goldsmiths. A display showing the various stages involved in the creation of the Claddagh ring is also on display. The museum is actually a place where jewelry is also manufactured. Guests have the option of having their ring personalized perfectly customized to their measurements and preferences.
The popularity of the Claddagh ring
Claddagh rings are now known all over the world. Many people prefer them for their wedding rings because of the symbols that evoke sentiments that are especially suitable for couples getting married. Sometimes these rings are passed on from generation to generation and have become part of the heritage of the family. In addition there are many jewelry collectors who are fond of buying collectible rings of different materials and sizes. They have also become meaningful gifts to give to close friends.
The images used in the Claddagh ring
The heart is the central symbol of the Claddagh ring. It represents the love offered to the loved one. Loyalty is represented by the giving of the crown, just as a subject is loyal to his acknowledged sovereign. Because both love and loyalty are freely given as gifts by the pair of hands holding them, those hands represent friendship. The message is that everlasting friendship and unending love is result of friendship, love and loyalty in mutual interaction.
The way the ring is worn has significations. If a person wears the ring on his right hand with the heart turned outwards he is saying that he has no emotional attachments. If, on the other hand the heart is turned towards the wearer, he is saying that he is involved but not committed to anyone. If the ring is found on the left hand of the wearer, he means to say the he is already married or engaged.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Gold Sovereign - Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a half sovereign and a sovereign ?
My mother has a gold sovereign with the head of Victoria dated 1900 but is not sure if it is a sovereign or a half sovereign. Can you help?
Answer:
A sovereign is quite big. In a ring it is possibly too large, especially a ladies ring. A sovereign is twice as heavy as a half sovereign (nearly 8gms compared to just under 4gms)
